The 2016 choir was made up of 4 children from each of our 6 partnership primary schools in the Madadeni Township. The choir of 24 travelled to the UK in May 2016 with their teachers where they toured for over 3 weeks. Every penny the choir raised whilst touring was sent straight back to their township schools to support their chosen development projects.
Prior to arriving in the UK the choir worked tirelessly for 10months rehearsing in South Africa with choir master, Mr Phakathi and his assistant Mr Zungu, whilst their schools made their costume attire and traditional Zulu drums for their performances.
Whilst on tour this incredibly talented choir visited multiple schools across the country to share their Zulu music, play and learn with UK school children. They also performed their traditional Zulu songs and dances at concert venues, busked in cities, recorded their own album and enjoyed ample sightseeing opportunities including their first ever visit to the seaside.
The money raised during the tour was divided equally amongst the 6 schools to contribute towards the following school development projects:
Sithobelumthetho Primary – support their ongoing Sportsfield Development project
Mntimande Primary – purchase school computers for IT lessons
Siyawela Primary - additional books for their school library
Jobstown Primary - additional books for their school library
Sipheni Primary – build a combination sports court for netball and other sports
Umcebowolwazi Primary – purchase school computers for IT lessons
This tour has now ended.
