Project Objective

To support the schools in the Project Zulu partnership to develop useable and robust policies and procedures for managing safeguarding issues as and when they arise in schools.

About the project

The Township Safeguarding project works with partner schools and community services to strengthen child protection practices and ensure staff feel confident responding to safeguarding concerns. Many township schools face complex challenges and limited access to specialist training, so the project focuses on developing practical, sustainable approaches that fit the local context.

Each year, the project is led by UWE academics with expertise in safeguarding and child protection, supported by a multidisciplinary team of social work, policing and paediatric nursing students. The team spends time with teachers and a range of local organisations, including the psycho-social department of the district education office, health clinics and police partners, to understand the challenges faced by schools and the wider community. This collaborative groundwork shapes the delivery of school‑based training, tailored workshops and wider conferences on areas such as child protection, bullying, anger management and the development of clear reporting procedures, depending on the needs identified in each school.
