Since the first Project Zulu Choir Tour in 2013, over 130 young people have travelled to the UK to share traditional Zulu songs and dances with audiences across the country. Through performances in schools, concert venues, churches and city centres, Choir Tours have celebrated wonderful Zulu culture, created opportunities for cultural exchange and generated more than £130,000 for school-identified development projects.
Over the years, participating schools have invested Choir Tour funds in a wide range of projects, including classrooms, libraries, sports facilities, technology resources and renewable energy infrastructure. These developments continue to benefit learners, staff and wider school communities long after each tour has ended.
2013 Choir Tour
Participating School: Sithobelumthetho Primary School
The first Project Zulu Choir Tour enabled Sithobelumthetho Primary School to invest in the installation of solar panels. The project improved access to reliable electricity and continues to reduce the school's ongoing energy costs.
2015 Choir Tour
Participating School: Sithobelumthetho Primary School
Building on the success of the first tour, funds raised through the 2015 Choir Tour were combined with additional funding from UWE Bristol and The Atlas Foundation to support the development of a sports field at Sithobelumthetho Primary School. Opened in 2021, the facility supports Physical Education, school sport and community use, and is also home to the Madadeni Bears rugby club.
2016 Choir Tour
Participating Schools: Sithobelumthetho, Mntimande, Siyawela, Jobstown, Sipheni and Umcebowolwazi Primary Schools
The 2016 Choir Tour brought together learners from six partner schools across Madadeni Township. Funds raised were shared equally between the participating schools and invested in a range of school-identified priorities, including library books, computer equipment and sports facilities that continue to support teaching and learning today.
2018 Choir Tour
Participating Schools: Siyawela and Umcebowolwazi Primary Schools
Funds raised through the 2018 Choir Tour were invested in improvements to learning facilities at both schools. This included the replacement of Grade R classrooms at Siyawela and security improvements at Umcebowolwazi to support future investment in technology.
2023 Choir Tour
Participating Schools: Jobstown and Mntimande Primary Schools
Choir Tour funds supported the development of additional learning facilities at both schools. At Jobstown Primary School, this included the creation of a multi-purpose learning space comprising a library, Grade R learning area and science laboratory. At Mntimande Primary School, funds are being invested in the development of a multi-purpose learning space that will support a range of learning needs across the school community.
Beyond fundraising, Choir Tours are an important celebration of culture, talent and partnership. They provide opportunities for young people from South Africa and the UK to learn from one another, share experiences and build lasting friendships.
For choir members, the tour provides a unique opportunity to travel to the UK, perform before audiences across the country and represent their schools and communities. Along the way, young people have opportunities to develop confidence, strengthen their English language skills, broaden their experiences and create memories that last a lifetime.
